The Marie Equi Center is dedicated to serving unhoused and low-income LGBTQAI2S+ individuals. Our new Trans and Queer Supportive Services Center is a Day Center focused on providing comprehensive support, including community health, peer services, and housing navigation. Job Summary
The Volunteer & Communications Coordinator will play a key role in connecting community members to our mission through a vibrant and well-organized volunteer program and engaging communications. This position oversees volunteer recruitment, training, scheduling, and retention, while also producing our monthly newsletter and managing community in-kind donations such as clothing and supplies.
We’re seeking someone who is friendly, organized, and community-minded, who can motivate and guide others with confidence, warmth, and persistence. The ideal candidate thrives on collaboration, enjoys storytelling, and brings strong coordination and communication skills to the team.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Volunteer Program Coordination
Recruit, onboard, and schedule volunteers for daily center operations and special events.
Serve as the main point of contact for volunteers, providing support and clear communication.
Collaborate with the Operations team to strengthen and expand the volunteer program.
Assist leadership team in developing and lead monthly new volunteer orientations.
Maintain volunteer records, schedules, and recognition systems.
Create a welcoming, inclusive environment that reflects our trauma-informed and equity-centered values.
In-Kind Donations & Community Engagement
Serve as the point of contact for the clothing closet and in-kind donations, coordinating inventory and distribution.
Build and maintain relationships with donors and community partners.
Support the coordination of community drives, events, and volunteer appreciation efforts.
Communications & Donor Relations
Create and distribute the monthly organizational newsletter, featuring program highlights and volunteer stories.
Assist with donor acknowledgment letters and help maintain donor communications systems.
Support social media or website updates as needed to promote volunteer opportunities and share impact stories.
Qualifications
At least two years of nonprofit experience in volunteer coordination, communications, or community engagement.
Strong writing, editing, and interpersonal communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to organize, schedule, and lead others effectively.
Proficiency with Google Workspace; experience with Mailchimp, Canva, or other communications tools preferred.
Comfortable facilitating orientations or trainings for small groups.
Collaborative, reliable, and proactive with excellent follow-through.
Commitment to trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and equity-centered work.
Preferred Qualities
Conversationally fluent in Spanish
Warm, approachable, and organized with a knack for motivating others.
Confident in setting boundaries and keeping volunteers on task with kindness and clarity.
Enjoys balancing logistics and creativity.
Work Schedule and Location
This position requires a regular on-site presence at the Center and occasional attendance at community events. All staff are required to wear masks during in-person services and events open to the public. Employees are provided with a work laptop and phone.
Necessary Special Requirements
Employees are required to protect the privacy and security of protected health information as defined by State and Federal Law. Employees must adhere to OSHA guidelines, including completing required training on time. An up-to-date COVID-19 vaccine is required for this role. Medical and/or religious exemptions will be assessed if needed by the applicant. Due to funder requirements, a background check is required for this position.
